Christmas appeal
salvation-army

The Salvation Army is one of the largest providers of accommodation for homeles men, women and families across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. More than just providing a roof over someone's head the social service centres, or ‘hostels' aim to be places of change, with staff who go the extra mile to deliver people-focused and life-changing services that dramatically boost the self-esteem, health and employability of participants.

In Dundee, The Salvation Army have Strathmore Lodge, a 25 bed hostel and Burnside Mill, a 20 bed resettlement unit. They offer support and temporary accommodation to single, homeless adults, who tend to be, in the main, male. They also offer support to rough sleepers.

For the OPERATION PINK Christmas appeal we are going to provide Christmas Stockings for the Strathmore Lodge and Burnside Mill service users. To be of most benefit these should contain things like:combo12

  • Wooly hats

  • Scarves

  • Gloves

  • Socks

  • Toiletries

  • Some treats e.g.chocolate and sweets

  • Anything else you think would be useful

Please note the service users are mostly male but there are also some females.

Closing date of appeal: Sunday 5th December

Operation PINK - Provision in Kindness

Aim

To work in conjunction with local charities and agencies with the provision of food and/or other essentials of a non perishable nature to those who are most in need in our city.

This is a no strings attached approach whereby the church as a whole can contribute to a worthy cause. This will provide a simple form of witness to the local communities in need that City Church cares about their social needs.

Method

Contact will be made with a local charity or agency which will establish what their specific needs are. Once this need has been established, a request will be presented to the church to make some provision in kindness to the charity or agency in relation to the need.

For example, a charity that deals with young single mothers may have a need for nappies. Therefore a request is made to the church to make donations of nappies and those members of the church who wish to, give in this area. The initiative continues on a weekly basis for a pre-defined period and thereafter all nappies collected are given to the charity as a gift from City Church.

Achievement

This will be achieved in the simplest of fashions. A large PINK bucket will be placed in a prominent place within the church on a weekly basis with a sign stating Operation PINK thereon. Members of the church will simply be asked to donate to the cause by placing the requested item in the bucket provided. When the bucket is full or a pre identified date has been reached, the contents will be donated to the chosen charity or agency.

Involvement

Members will be encouraged to share as much involvement as possible and  to think of charities or agencies whom they would like to see assisted in this way. Each time a donation is made to a charity then another one is chosen for the next time.

It may transpire that there is an individual charity or agency or indeed group of charities or agencies that the church provides to on a more permanent basis.
